Men don’t often talk about their looks, but behind closed doors, many are doing something despite the poor economy and financial struggles associated with the recession. The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) suggest that UK plastic surgeons performed 581 male breast reductions in 2009. In all, gynaecomastia, male breast reduction surgery increased 80% making it the third most popular procedure for men.

Genetics, aging, medical conditions, drugs and obesity are the main contributors to the formation of male breasts (also referred to by many as moobs or man-boobs). Regardless how they get there, these chest formations are extremely difficult to reduce.  Even when resorting to a surgical solution, patients only have two options.

The most common is undergoing liposuction surgery. Procedures require special tools suck out fatty cells that have collected around the nipple. As the plastic surgeon removes excess tissue, the skin begins to lay flat and appear smooth. This only requires a small incision, leaving little to no scaring, keeping the skin in a normal shape.

Plastic Surgery Numbers Up Across the UK for Men and Women

Gynaecomastia wasn’t the only procedure Britons were seeking out last year. The top five plastic surgery procedures for men include rhinoplasty (nose jobs), blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), breast reduction, otoplasty (ear correction), and liposuction. The top five procedures for women include breast augmentation, eyelid surgery, breast reduction, face / neck lift, and tummy tucks.

In all, UK plastic surgeons performed 36,482 surgical procedures in 2009, which is an increase of 6.7% over 2008.  Interestingly, the recession has negatively affected certain procedures. Facelifts for women fell by 8% and plastic surgeons and other medical experts feel this has occurred because patients are seeking cheaper options. This includes brow lifts, eyelid surgery, and nose jobs, which increased 43%, 6% and 25% respectively.
