Laser Fat Removal Treatment Gets to Areas Exercise and Diet Can?t. Fat Removal Without Surgery

So what is it we don’t like about ourselves? Despite Gok Wan’s best efforts at making us feel good about ourselves – nude, it appears that many of us (73% of women in fact) are not happy with our wobbly bits. Some of the main areas of concern include: love handles – 18%, bingo wings 12%, tummy’s or pot bellies 27%, double chins 13%, with inner thighs, knees and breasts among making up the remaining percentage of items we are unhappy about.

It appears however, that no matter how hard we exercise and diet – a combination of our genetic coding and the aging process make it an uphill battle to get our ‘perfect bodies’. Yet many of us are unwilling to go for full plastic surgery and have liposuction fat removal and tummy tucks. Fear not, you are not alone. According to Dr. Salinda Johnson from Harlequin Medical Cosmetic Surgery Clinic in London – ‘It is impossible to target some of these specific areas with exercise and diet alone. Our bodies will use fat stores from wherever it naturally occurs first. Everybody is different in this respect, which may seem as a blessing or a curse, so don’t compare yourself to anybody else in this regard. But it is possible without liposuction fat removal cosmetic surgery.

Where liposuction fat removal tipped the scales in the plastic surgery for fat reduction market, now Laser lipolysis has weighed in. Also known as Smart lipo, lunchtime lipo and laser lipo this fat and cellulite treatment can be used to treat smaller specific areas such as thighs, chins, bingo wings, hips, buttocks, tummy and love handles.

This is the latest technology in the fight against fat and cellulite, achieving brilliant results. The way it works is that a small incision is made and a fibre optic cable and canulae to the laser lipolyisis machine is inserted – blasting fat and cellulite cells in that area – destroying the fat cells to prolong their return. The melted fat is then sucked out and the patient is free to leave with a smoother, flatter more slim area. The laser liposuction or smart lipo procedure takes about an hour and is done under local anaesthetic, so the patient is free to leave straight after the procedure.

Managing Director of Harlequin Medical Mr. Cade Witnish says ‘We have seen a sharp increase in the number of healthy and fit individuals visiting the clinic for fat and cellulite treatments. There has been a shift from liposuction surgery and tummy tuck cosmetic surgery in London, to laser lipolyisis. These people have a BMI of 25 – 30 and just have areas that despite how hard they try with diet and exercise, want to target a specific area. The business for tighter tummies, shapely thighs, love handles, back fat, hips and buttocks has increased by 200% in the last month.’

The only downside with laser lipolysis maybe slight bruising, and wearing a compression garment for 2 weeks on either your thighs, buttocks, stomach, hips, love handle or other area treated with restrictions on exercise during this period.

So you see – there is a new champion in the fight against fat – tummy’s, thighs, hips, buttocks, bingo wings, chins and other stubborn fatty areas.

Smartlipo Laser Assisted Liposuction

Smartlipo Laser Assisted Liposuction

Goodbye Flabby Skin!

Ever so often, men and women who have succeeded in losing considerable weight have ended up with ugly flab. Liposuction, a technique for suctioning surplus fatty tissue continues to be used for flab removal. A relatively new development in liposuction technology is SmartLipo laser assisted liposuction. SmartLipo has made history by being the first laser device designed for fat cell disruption and for LaserBody Sculpting.

SmartLipo laser assisted liposuction can effectively remove flabby skin or fat in areas of the arms, face, male breasts, neck, mons pubis or knees. Even revisions and touchups can be done with this groundbreaking laserlipolysis. Anyone wishing to undergo SmartLipo should be healthy and not excessively exceeding his/her most suitable weight (upto 25 lbs is okay). If additional treatment is required in a particular area, the patient is typically recommended to wait for a period of 4 to 6 months before proceeding with it.

Fat Removal through Fat Liquefaction and Laser Technology

The FDA approved non-invasive SmartLipo laser technology liquefies the unwanted fat, by releasing energy when entering it. The visualization of the laser’s targeting beam through the skin enables the doctor to identify the area to be treated. Selective interaction between the fat cells and laser beam incites breaking up of lipocyte and adipose cell membranes, facilitating natural removal of their oily liquid contents. This powerful laser contributes to making the treatment almost devoid of side effects. The patient is put under tumescent and local anesthesia when the procedure is in progress.

Extensive Experience Necessary to Perform a SmartLipo Procedure

If results are desired from SmartLipo, it has to be used in combination with MIL (Minimally Invasive Liposuction). So, the operating surgeon wanting to practice SmartLipo laser assisted liposuction should be well-experienced in conventional liposuction.

SmartLipo scores high in terms of safety and minimal discomfort. If fast and lasting freedom from fat is required, SmartLipo is the way to go.

Dr. Spero Theodorou, a talented New York City plastic surgeon, runs Park Avenue Smart Lipo, the only New York City SmartLipo training facility. Doctor Spero J. Theodorou offers safe and efficacious Smart Lipo treatments at his AAASF (American Association Ambulatory Surgical Facilities) accredited center in New York City.

The Abc’s of Laser Liposuction

The Abc’s of Laser Liposuction

Liposuction came onto the cosmetic surgery scene more than 30 years ago, providing patients the opportunity to say goodbye to unwanted pockets of fat that would not disappear through traditional weight loss methods. During this time, the procedures have been tweaked and refined to make the process safer and more effective for patients seeking this solution. Today, there are a variety of liposuction treatments to choose from, making it easier to customize a procedure directly to the unique needs of the patient.

Many are tuning into the benefits of laser liposuction and with good reason. This updated procedure is even less invasive than traditional liposuction treatments, meaning less discomfort and less downtime afterward. It is also done with a local anesthetic, as opposed to the general that may be used for many other types of liposuction procedures. This new option in getting rid of unwanted fat has taken the cosmetic surgery world by storm, because it provides excellent results with even less risk and recovery time.

How does it Work?

Traditional methods of liposuction involved small incisions and the insertion of a narrow, stainless steel tube known as a cannula. This tube would be attached to a suction device that could remove fat for a smoother body contour. While the procedure itself was generally painless with the help of an anesthetic, recovery afterward could include bruising, swelling and tenderness around the incision sites. In contrast, laser liposuction uses a low energy laser to effectively destroy the fat cells and then drain them out of the body.

Because the laser treatment is minimally invasive, it can be done in a fraction of the time and with less risk than traditional surgical methods. And while other types of liposuction may require a general anesthetic and a number of days of recovery time, laser liposuction  is always completed under a local anesthetic with much less recuperation time required. In fact, many patients have been able to return to normal activities within two days after laser treatment, as opposed to the two weeks that are often needed to bounce back from surgical liposuction methods.

How Long does it Work?

Like other types of liposuction treatment, laser liposuction is considered a permanent procedure. However, if weight is put on after the procedure, it can allow fat pockets to reform, requiring additional treatments to eliminate them. The best way to avoid this problem is to stick with a healthy diet and regular exercise after the procedure to keep the weight in check and the results permanent. With healthy habits to back up the liposuction procedure, the inches lost and the improved body contour can be enjoyed over the long term.

Laser liposuction does not come completely risk free, but the risks involved with this procedure are relatively minimal compared to other types of cosmetic treatments. To help reduce risk even further, select a doctor who is experienced in this particular technique and who is thorough in assessing patients for candidacy. This will help to ensure that the procedure will be as safe and effective as possible.

Liposuction by Laser

June 6th, 2010 1 Comment   Posted in General Liposuction

Liposuction by Laser

Advancements in methods of fat removal by liposuction continue to change and be improved. One of the most noteworthy methods that is currently marketed and touted is laser liposuction, or more accurately, laser-assisted liposuction.

As opposed to the traditional technique of a hollowed-out cannula insertion, loosening and beating up the fat tissue, and then sucking it out, this mechanical particulation is replaced by the heat of laser energy. Inside the liposuction cannula, fibers carrying laser light deliver their heat to the targeted fat breaking it down into a liquid ’soup’ which can be suctioned out. Theoretically, the skin in the areas overlying where the liposuction was done may get tighter due to the heat from the laser.

As of this date, there are three such laser-assisted liposuction systems available in the United States. They are under the marketed tradenames of SMARTLIPO (Cynosure), COOLLIPO (CoolTouch), and PROLIPO (Sctiton). All of them tout more effective and efficient fat removal, less bruising and swelling after the procedure, a faster recovery, and some skin tightening and improvement in the appearance of cellulite over the treated areas.

The real question is….are they truly better than basic liposuction…and are their increased costs over traditional liposuction worth it? (someone has to pay for the equipment purchase…and that someone is you the patient!) To date, laser-assisted liposuction is tremendously appealing, particularly to the general public. In the past, any medical treatment that included the word, laser, always enamors the public. No clinical trials have yet been reported however, that I have seen, that have ever directly compared any laser-assisted vs traditional liposuction procedure in patients. No clinical trial, large or small, has yet been done that has compared the results of any touted liposuction method in a prospective, controlled clinical study. FDA approval of these devices implies that they are safe for patient use but that does not mean they are necessarily more effective than other liposuction methods.

Much like ultrasonic-assisted liposuction when it was introduced 10 years ago, laser-assisted liposuction may be a popular trend that, in the end, will fare no better. It will undoubtably have its place in liposuction options and armamentarium but I doubt if it is magic or whether it offers a quantum leap forward in patient outcomes and recovery times. While it is another method of removing fat, I remain skeptical if all of the marketing claims of laser-assisted liposuction such as a quicker recovery and skin tightening can live up to the hype.

I am all for any form of advancement in liposuction, which is a fairly traumatic procedure on the tissues. While effective, liposuction is still one of the most ‘brutal’ procedures that we as plastic surgeons do. Is laser-assted liposuction a better method of liposuction?…..ask me again in 5 years!
